Why Wool?

Norwegian Wool

100% Pure Norwegian Wool

All Norlender sweaters and accessories are manufactured with prue Norwegian wool. Sheep graze the fjord sides and endure the harsh Norwegian winters to produce the uniquie wool worn for hundresd of years!

Norwegian Wool

Norwegian wool is one of the miracles of nature. This unique gift is part of our Norwegian heritage and has filled an historic role in survival in the hostile environment of the North. That said, it has never had more relevance than it has today, given soaring passions for outdoor activities, high performance outerwear, turning down thermostats, and desire to sustain a healthy environment.

Our products use only 100% pure wool yarn, a natural fiber resulting from healthy sheep herding in the mountains of Norway. Wool’s complex cellular structure enables it to absorb moisture vapor, but repel liquid, something no synthetic has been able to do. Amazingly, these attributes of the fleece continue to perform even after it has been shorn. Norlender Norwegian spinners produce and dye the yarn with very strict rules; no heavy metals or damaging chemicals are allowed. Thankfully, wool yarns absorb dyes very well creating truly brilliant colors. As wool replenishes itself each time the sheep is sheared and continues to grow throughout the sheep’s lifetime, it is a fully renewable resource.

In addition to wool’s exceptional properties as a natural, renewable, water-repellant fiber, many incredible benefits may surprise you:

Water Repellant Water Resistant - Unlike human hair, wool fibers are hollow with a hard, water-repellent exterior composed of small, overlapping sections similar to shingles on a roof. Each fiber’s core can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without becoming damp, while the hard outer layer protects against snow or rain.
Breathable Breathable – Wool has a wide comfort range, very helpful for adapting to changing weather conditions. This makes wool the perfect fiber for crafting outerwear and insulating apparel, since it can provide warmth in colder conditions and also breathes well as temperatures warm up.
Wicking  Moisture wicking – If you perspire in cold temperatures, no worries. Wool wicks perspiration away from the body and allows it to evaporate quickly, thus keeping you warmer.
Anit-Bacterial  Anti-bacterial – Wool is better than other textiles at absorbing sweat and releasing it into the air, before bacteria or odor take hold—a natural fiber that’s odor resistant!
Elastic Elastic – Due to its crimped structure, wool stretches with the wearer while returning to its natural shape, reducing wrinkling, sagging, or the need for replacement.
Flame Resistant  Flame resistant – Thanks to its high water and nitrogen content, wool fiber naturally resists fire.
UV Resistant  UV resistant – Naturally high level of UV protection, higher than most synthetics and cotton.
Nonallergenic  Nonallergenic – Not known to cause allergies and does not promote growth of bacteria.
Bio-degradable Bio-degradable - At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. It takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade.

While wool is the only yarn we use, Norlender knitwear is specially designed for children, women and men with different types of wool and unique knitting techniques to suit a range of styles and occasions—formal, sporty and leisure. You’ll always find the highest quality Norwegian wool be it medium or light weight for mid-layer or outer layer wear, our dressier felted wool, or our extra-fine, ultra soft Merino.

Merino Wool Merino Wool

Wool from merino sheep, long prized for its luxury qualities, has superior shine, incredible softness and great breathability, along with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. The merino has a nearly pure white color that accepts dye very well. It’s also very strong, naturally elastic and particularly soft against the skin.

Felted Wool

Strong yarns are woven loosely into cloth which then undergoes a lengthy process of shrinking, eventually acquiring the texture of felt and becoming quite dense. Due to finishing processes that completely conceal the weave, this type of wool makes a very solid cloth with a smooth exterior surface. Felted wool is supple, durable, insulating and water resistant.
